Piketon Beginner Band

This is the home page for the elementary band program within the Scioto Valley Local Schools. This band involves the sixth grade and this element of the band program is responsible for the fundamental and intermediate development of the student musician.  Students of all shapes, sizes, and ages are members of the band, and all students receive a musical education consisting of not only the fundamentals of playing an instrument, but also the fundamentals of reading and appreciating music.

The band rehearses literature of the appropriate age and developmental level.  Students rehearse two days a week in a full ensemble setting.  During the remaining three days, studens work in brass, woodwind, or percussion sectionals to help emphasize the skill set that is specific for their instrument.  As a result, students receive comprehensive knowledge in the development of band sound and playing techniques.

Students rehearse daily on literature and performance techniques that enhance their mastery of the instrument and the understanding of musical notation and history.  In addition, students are exposed to the cultural aspects of music and the significance of music within society.  During this level, students are also exposed to the many styles of music, as well as the variety of ensembles available within the band program.  Students in this group work in rehearsal to prepare four concerts: in the fall, at Christmas time, early spring, and an end of the year concert.

As a member of the band program in the sixth grade, students are also able to participate in other elective classes such as art, and physical education.  Many of the band students also participate in LEAD and are involved in extra-curricular activities such as sports, Heart for Art, and the Masters of Music program.

We are always looking for new members, so if you are interested in joining the band, please contact Mr. Peitz.

How do I join?

To join band, you need to attend the student/parent meeting on August 27, 2015 at 6pm!  During this meeting, you will get to try each instrument and make a decision on which one you would like to play.  Have at least two or three instruments you would be interested in playing, just in case all of the spots for your chosen instrument are filled!

Band is open to all students!  A representative from Rettig Music will be in attendance to help you and your parents rent an instrument for you to use.  If you are unable to rent an instrument, we have several school owned instruments that you can use.  The number of school instruments we have is extremely limited, and in many cases, we may not have the instrument you choose.  Please be understanding of this.

We are looking forward to having you as a member of the Rockin' Redstreaks Band family!
